After a long wait, the WhatsApp app is now officially available for Wear OS 3 and newer versions. Google had teased WhatsApp for Wear OS back at the Google I/O event a couple of months ago. Subsequently, a WhatsApp beta was released for smartwatches, but it wasn’t stable enough for daily use. Now that the stable version of WhatsApp for Wear OS is available, you can easily install it on your smartwatch.
If you’re unsure about the installation process, I’ll share how to install and use WhatsApp on Wear OS 3+ smartwatches like Galaxy Watch 4, Galaxy Watch 5, Pixel Watch, and others.
The stable version of WhatsApp for Wear OS was recently released, offering features like starting conversations, replying to messages, quick replies, answering WhatsApp calls, and more. If you use WhatsApp on your phone and own a Wear OS smartwatch, adding WhatsApp to your wearable can be a valuable addition.
As you know WhatsApp allows using the same account on multiple devices via the Linked Devices feature. And the primary device need not be connected to the internet, just the one connected to your primary device. This means to use WhatsApp on your watch, only the watch needs to be connected to the internet and not your primary phone.
How to Install WhatsApp on Your Wear OS Smartwatches
To get the WhatsApp your smartwatch must be running on wear OS 3 or newer version. So if you have Galaxy Watch 4, Galaxy Watch 5, Pixel Watch etc, then you can follow this process. The Galaxy Watch 6 is also scheduled to launch soon which might already come with WhatsApp, if not you can install using this method.
Update your wear OS Smartwatch
As WhatsApp official version is rolling out for wear OS 3+ watches, you will have more chances to get it before others if you are running on the latest available version. So make sure to check for Watch update and install it if available.
Connect your Watch to your Phone
Now connect your Wear OS smartwatch to your Phone in which you are using WhatsApp. Also, you need to make sure either your phone has internet connection. You can also connect your smartwatch to WiFi for fast downloading. You can also try without connecting your Smartwatch to your phone, but the watch must have an internet connection (not tested but might work this way too).
Download WhatsApp on your Smartwatch
Downloading WhatsApp is similar to downloading other apps. Hereโs what you need to do:
Step 1: On your Smartwatch navigate to Play Store and open it.
Step 2: You will see the banner of WhatsApp as it’s a new app for Watch. Tap on it. If you don’t see the banner, search for WhatsApp and it will appear on top, open it.
Step 3: Tap on the Install button and wait for its installation. Your Watch should have an internet connection or must be connected to your phone which has an internet connection.
Set up WhatsApp on your Smartwatch
Once you have installed WhatsApp on your Smartwatch, it is time to connect it with the account you have on your phone. To set up your WhatsApp account on your Watch, here’s what you have to do.
- Launch the recently installed WhatsApp app on your Watch.
- This will send a WhatsApp notification on your phone, also you will see a code on your Watch.
- Tap on the Notification that you received on your phone, which will send you to a confirmation page, and tap the Confirm button.
- Now you need to enter the code from your Smartwatch to your phone.
- As soon as you enter the code the device will be linked to your account.
- All chats will be synced to your watch, and you can use WhatsApp on your smartwatch independent of your phone.
You can unlink your smartwatch from your phone. Open WhatsApp and tap the three dots and go to Linked Devices. Here you can remove the Wear OS device by tapping on it and then Log Out.
So as you can see it is quite easy to install WhatsApp on your Galaxy Watch, Pixel Watch, and other wear OS smartwatches. In case you have any queries feel free to ask them in the comment section.
